Diverse smallpox strains were widespread in the Viking Age, new study reveals

Samples of DNA from Viking Age DNA skeletons identified the presence of smallpox 1,000 years earlier than previously understood -- in 11 individuals living in Northern Europe between 600 and 1050 AD.
